Bathroom styling advice from an interior designer

Bathrooms can often be one of the smallest rooms in a home, creating functionality is most people’s primary objective, however, thought should also be applied to elements of the space that will create the greatest impact, enhancing your feeling of relaxation and sanctuary.

Consider your main views such as when you open the bathroom door, what will your eye immediately be drawn to? Likewise when you linger in the bath what is your perspective from there? Taking the time to imagine yourself in the space will enhance how you view it from different angles.

Early consideration of storage solutions will also go a long way towards improving the functionality, are there any awkward corners that can be transformed into a cupboard with slide out shelves that contain all of those unsightly bathroom essentials?

Often bathrooms can be considered as a purely utilitarian space, which can leave them feeling cold and uninviting. However, a bathroom does not have to feel disconnected from your overall home style and can also carry hero pieces like an open fireplace, or a dramatic coloured piece of furniture such as the vanity unit or a freestanding bath tub, these features can add warmth and an unexpected element of personality to a space.

Windowless rooms are naturally dark and so this is your opportunity to play with the atmosphere, consider installing mirror to niches and alcoves, and generally play to the moodiness of the space to create an unexpected sanctuary.
